Rachel &
Shaun Elhai
First Date:
September 2009
Wedding Date:
Oct. 12, 2014
Venue:
Turf Valley Country Club
Residence:
Pikesville
Favorite Activity:
Dog park with 2-year-old Zoe

On April 13, 2013, Shaun Elhai and Rachel Golberg went shopping for an engagement ring. They gazed at the beautiful diamonds, and Rachel found one she liked. Shaun left a deposit to guarantee the ring was theirs.

That evening, they headed out to dinner to celebrate. They had purchased their first house together, and Shaun, a real estate agent as well as an accountant for the Social Security Administration, had completed a sale. After, they cabbed to Little Italy for dessert. The line stretched down the side of the building. Rachel
suggested they head elsewhere.

A few minutes later, they were seated. It was the same table they occupied on their first date in September 2009. Just as they did that night, they ordered coffee and a cannoli to share.

Shaun saw the waiter come around the corner and took a deep breath. He dropped to one knee as Rachel read the words painted in chocolate on the cannoli plate: “Will you …”

Shaun, 29, finished with, “make me the happiest man in the world.”

The packed house of about 80 applauded, and Rachel’s father, Laurence Golberg, appeared after photographing the special moment from the second floor.

Shaun “left” his credit card at the Capital Grille, and they returned to the restaurant to find 30 family members and friends, including their parents, Laurence and Molli Golberg and Lois and Irvin Elhai.

It was a special night for the couple, who had met at a mutual friend’s apartment in August 2009 and felt an instant connection. Rachel fell for Shaun and his friendly, outgoing demeanor that night. Shaun remembers her natural beauty and easygoing and caring disposition, fitting for her job as a pediatric nurse at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Within three months, they had professed their love and continued doing everything together, whether going to movies, restaurants or concerts.

They moved in together in November 2011 and a little over a year later, adopted Zoe, a Shar-Pei Lab mix.
A week later, Rachel fell ill and was hospitalized. Shaun stayed with her in the hospital and nursed her as she recovered.

“As a nurse, it was hard to allow someone else to take care of me,” said Rachel, 28. “I was afraid he wasn’t going to love me because I was sick.”

Rachel was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis two years later, and together they participate in the MS Walk each April in the hope that the funds raised will help provide for a cure.

Rabbi Steven Schwartz of Beth El Congregation officiated their ceremony at Turf Valley Country Club on Oct. 12, 2014. Two hundred guests witnessed their traditional touches including wrapping themselves in the bar mitzvah tallis from Kenneth Golberg, Rachel’s zaydie. They also draped their own b’nai mitzvoth tallis on the chuppah and used Rachel’s grandfather’s ring for the ceremony. Rachel said she knew Shaun was her beshert long before her illness, but that “sealed the deal.”

“No matter what bump we hit in our journey, we keep going,” she said. “We are going to do it together.”

SDAT Now Has Twitter Account

‍‍2015-02-05 11:41:31 - כח כסלו תשעה mjankovitz

Tweeting is usually for the birds, but now it’s also for the Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT). The agency is already on Facebook, but in the interest of reaching more Marylanders, SDAT now provides valuable information from the agency on Twitter.

“The more ways we have to reach out to Marylanders, the better off we all are,” said acting agency director Owen Charles. The agency’s Twitter feed provides Marylanders information, updates, links and the occasional miscellaneous Maryland tweet.

The Twitter account will provide links to information from SDAT as well as other state and federal agencies.

“It should also help differentiate us from other agencies and local government finance offices as well as the Maryland comptroller’s office,” said Charles.
Follow the agency on Twitter @MD_SDAT.
