WESTMINSTER, Md. – A solo exhibition at McDaniel College showcases mixed media paintings by Evan Boggess that are drawn from his childhood in the West Virginia mountains. “Pressure/Heat/Time: Paintings by Evan Boggess” runs Tuesday, August 27 – Friday, September 20, in McDaniel’s Rice Gallery, Peterson Hall, at 2 College Hill, Westminster, Md. An opening reception takes place Thursday, August 29, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., with an artist talk at 6 p.m.

A painter working primarily in mixed media, Evan Boggess says that his paintings behave like sculpture requiring the audience to physically move through the work.

“I grew up in the weirdness of the West Virginia mountains,” he said. “The strange, yet stoic people living in the harsh, yet beautiful landscape provided a rich pool of subject matter to draw from as a young artist. I have always painted, and the figure has been my most prevalent focus. Most recently, the figure has been evoked through the viewers themselves.”

According to Boggess, each painting in this exhibition begins as a representational study of a directly observed raw mineral and many of the minerals used also appear in the list of ingredients on tubes of paint.

“Pressure, heat, and time are the conditions that shape earth’s metamorphic minerals. They are also the conditions under which I have structured the paintings in this exhibition,” explains Boggess. “I excavate pressure, heat, and time out of the context of mineralogy and translate them into the language of painting.”

He received a Master of Fine Arts degree in 2011 from Maryland Institute College of Art. More information about Evan Boggess can be found at http://evanboggessart.com.
