Fresh off the hit Yo Gabba Gabba National Tour, Biz Markie, “the clown prince of hip hop”, is a rapper, beatboxer, DJ, comedian, and singer. The legendary Biz Markie brings more than 26 years of entertaining to Pier Six Pavilion for Chessie Jam. Recently, he has been featured in a regular segment, Biz’s Beat of the Day, on the Yo Gabba Gabba television series, in which he teaches children to beatbox. Biz Markie believes in the importance of young children being exposed to the fundamental elements of hip-hop. “It’s important because it’s a natural thing where you can grow and use your imagination. Everything is digital these days, but with hip-hop you can use your imagination,” Biz Markie explained. A performer since the age of 14, Biz is the definition of longevity and has managed to remain one of the most notable hiphop artists and DJ’s in the world. In 2008, his song Just a Friend, from 1989, made the VH1 list of the 100 greatest hip hop songs of all time.
Justin Roberts is the winner of seven National Parenting Publications (NAPPA) Gold Awards, and eight Parents’ Choice Gold Awards. Not Naptime was included in the Parents’ Choice list of the 25 best children’s CDs of the past 25 years, and Jungle Gym was MetroKids’ top children’s CD of 2010. Meltdown, Pop Fly and Jungle Gym were each chosen as the “Number One Children’s CD of the Year” by Fids and Kamily, and Roberts’ albums have been among Amazon’s “Top 10 Children’s CDs of the Year” four times. Meltdown was given as an example of the “Best Children’s Music of the Past 30 Years” at Time Out NY Kids. Jungle Gym was nominated for a GRAMMY Award for best album for children in 2011; Recess was nominated for a GRAMMY Award for best album for children in 2014
Recess Monkey is the nationally acclaimed trio of teachers who make music for kids and families that truly rocks along with helping to “meld the sensibility of the singer-songwriter with themes aimed at kids under 10”. Seamlessly meshing their indie-rock roots with their keen awareness of childhood themes, the band continues to make waves coast to coast. “Deep Sea Diver” is the band’s ninth album, showcasing the high-energy, pitch-perfect understanding of what gets kids excited that has launched them into national awareness
Baltimore’s own Milkshake’s mission is to write quality rock music for children, they released their first album, Happy Songs, in 2002, followed quickly by Bottle of Sunshine in 2004. Following the success of their first two albums, the band was asked to contribute some music for kids television, which was something they were no strangers to with Love Riot (having had their music featured on the show Homicide: Life on the Streets). Milkshake has had their songs show up on Discovery Kids ’ ToddWorld, Nick Jr.’s Jack’s Big Music Show, and PBS Kids’ Share the Earth Day series. In 2007, they released their third album, Play!, followed by their first DVD, Screen Play, which was released in 2008. A Great Day, Milkshake’s fourth album, was released in 2009 and earned the group a Grammy nomination for “Best Musical Album for Children.”
Father Goose, The King of the Dance Party is a proven multi-talented entertainer, “Father Goose” has made his way into the children’s music scene by letting children enjoy nursery sing-alongs while allowing their parents to reminisce about their own childhood melodies. “Father Goose” is featured on all Dan Zanes and Friends successful albums, DVDs and videos. From the Rocket Ship Beach album you can hear his performance of ABC where he makes learning tables fun for kids. On the Grammy Award winning album Catch That Train, he gives sterling performances on two of the hit singles Pata, Pata and Chu Chu Chu Boogie. He also performed on the songs Down in the Valley and Old Joe Clark, on the Grammy nominated album House Party. Now “Father Goose” has his own family CD titled It’s a Bam Bam Diddly!, filled with contagious Caribbean sounds including reggae and mento mixed with energetic vocals and instruments. It’s a party in a CD, which starts in Jamaica and ends in Brooklyn with guest performances from Dan Zanes, Sheryl Crow, Coolie Ranx, Sister Carol and other Caribbean stars. The album has since been awarded by the Parent’s Choice Foundation and its songs like Bam Bam have charted at number one on XM Kids and still remains in rotation along with other favorites Flying Machine and Chi Chi Buddo.
