Columbia Pro Cantare celebrates the anniversaries of three Howard County treasures with a concert that highlights the special connection between the chorus and Columbia’s founder, James Rouse (1914-1996). Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait is one of the featured works on the program, which was narrated by Mr. Rouse in a CPC concert at Baltimore’s Harborplace in 1980. The May 14 concert will also include Tom Benjamin’s I Build a House, commissioned by the chorus in honor of Mr. Rouse and his vision for the new community, and performed in 1997 at the opening of the theatre that bears his name. Renowned baritone Lester Lynch, who recently received critical acclaim for his performance in Porgy and Bess, and who has been a popular CPC soloist for many years, will be the featured performer for both works and sing American spirituals accompanied by pianist Joel Martin in the second half of the concert. Also on the program, Boatman’s Dance and Simple Gifts from Copland’s Old American Songs.
CPC founder and artistic director Frances Motyca Dawson will conduct the concert, which will also feature the Howard County Concert Orchestra.
Tickets are $23 and $20 (students and sr. citizens) in advance; $2 more at the door. Children 5-15 years old: $10. Purchase tickets online at www.procantare.org or by phone at 301.854.0107 or 410.799.9321.
