Bagels, Knishes and You–The Origins of Jewish Food

BAGELS, KINISHES and YOU — The Origins of Jewish Food

Michael Bloom

What makes a kosher pickle kosher? Does it chew its cud? Why do Jews and delis go together like, well, schmaltz and cholesterol? And what’s the Jewish tie to bagels? Our speaker enlightened us in the spring with a talk on Jews and the Civil War. Ever versatile, this Fall he’ll be back to talk about Jewish food and how it came to be seen as “Jewish.”

Michael is currently a chaplain with the Jewish War veterans and a docent at the 6th and I Historic Synagogue in Washington. He’s a graduate of Yeshiva University, Harvard and the Boston University Law School and served as director of planning and management analysis at the U.S. Treasury Department.
