Baltimore Happiness Club
The Baltimore Happiness Club (BHC), a drop-in support group for anyone who wishes to increase their level of happiness, has been meeting weekly for 1.5 years.
BHC is based on Gateway to Happiness, by Rabbi Zelig Pliskin, and on the premise that happiness is a skill that can be learned. Whereas some people are “born happy,” most of us are not always naturally happy, but we can learn to be.
BHC is an interactive, lively group that uses Rabbi Pliskin and other happiness teachers as sources. Through simple exercises, discussion, and sharing real-life situations, we learn to increase and improve our happiness skills and equip ourselves to be more resilient and, through taking charge of our happiness, to take charge of our lives.

Student Thesis Exhibition

The Senior Thesis Exhibition showcases the work of Jane Aviv Brenner, Erin Bucklew, Morgan Welch and Alix Lindley, four senior artists graduating from the art department. The work ranges in variety of technique, subject and medium but all were designed to tell the story of each artist.

Morgan Welch’s landscape paintings challenge how viewers normally look at nature. Welch pushes for vivid fields of color using thick application of paint rather than detail. Those aspects are what give the painting their beautiful abstract qualities. Welch says that, “I hope the audience will engage in the beauty rather than the reality.”  In her portraits, Welch focuses on the fluidity of paint, color, contrast, and realism. Her use of bright colors is apparent as she highlights the importance of each subject.

Jane Aviv Brenner’s watercolors are an exploration of her own emotions through the portraits of others. Each colorful and highly saturated piece documents and reflects not only a moment in time, but a sentiment. Brenner uses her watercolors as a remedy, expressing herself freely in subject, texture, and color.

Erin Bucklew’s drawings are composed of small lines that make a complex image. One of the subjects is a dreamscape. This is made up of contour lines woven into a complex landscape. The other subject is animals, the marks imitate the fur of the animal. She mainly concentrates on the texture and color of the image.

Alix Lindley’s photography is an investigation of personal relationships. Through her intimate and delicate photographs she explores the complex didactic nature of human interaction.  By using self-portraiture she is able to blend the photographic process with the emotional experience of the subject.

The Senior Thesis Exhibition highlights the astounding work of these dedicated students preparing to graduate from Notre Dame of Maryland University with their B.A.s in studio art and progressing into the world as artists.
