Bliss Point, Brett Freund Solo Exhibition at Baltimore Clayworks

Baltimore Clayworks is proud to host Bliss Point, Brett Freund Solo Exhibition. This exhibition features Freund’s work from his past year as the Lormina Salter Fellowship Artist. The show runs June 22- August 10, 2013.

Bliss Point- the amount of an ingredient such as salt, sugar, or fat which optimizes palatability.

This exhibition is the culmination of Freund’s year in the Baltimore Clayworks’ studio as our Lormina Salter Fellowship Artist. Featuring slip-cast forms intuitively rearranged into functional and
sculptural objects. The origins of Freund’s work starts conceptually as a product that communicates preciousness but is manipulated with a chaotic integrity that confuses intention and understanding of value. His work investigates patterns of aesthetics and symbols in order to produce a mash-up of form and imagery by exploring the decorative nature of the highbrow and the surplus of culture.

Gizmos, Gadgets and Gears

Baltimore’s Inner Harbor will become an epicenter for Do-It-Yourself invention beginning July 1, as all three floors of the Maryland Science Center transform into a hotbed of contraptions, challenges and creative inspiration for Gizmos, Gadgets & Gears—a special summer experience all day, every day, through Labor Day.

Visitors can build it, break it, test it or take it home in dozens of Gizmos, Gadgets & Gears activities and workshops engineered for an imagination-fueled summer of tinkering. Among the 50+ experiences that turn visitors into inventors are mousetrap-built racecar races, rubber band-powered helicopter flight tests, recycled CD art design and pinhole camera construction. Guests should keep their eyes peeled for Pop-Up, Bite-sized and Shock Science demonstrations—unannounced moments of exploring science marvels such as stomp rockets, zoetropes and alka-seltzer powered propulsions.

Gizmos, Gadgets & Gears activities are free with paid admission to the Maryland Science Center. For dates of specific activities, more information and ticket prices, visit www.marylandsciencecenter.org or call the 24-Hour Information Line at 410-685-5225.

CRAIG CLIFFORD’s RECLAMATION at Baltimore Clayworks

JUNE 22–AUGUST 10, 2013

Clifford’s pieces are made by the assemblage of hundreds of press molded, kitsch forms to create texture that at first glance seems to be a mere surface, but then draws the viewer in with slices of recognizable imagery. He transforms these hollow, trite sentimentalized images that come from commercial molds of ‘art’ to create the work. The forms themselves are cast from found objects like refined teacups and serving pieces from cast off china sets, images of refinement and wealth and act as a contrast to the surface.
