TOT Shabbat

This is a wonderful Shabbat service for pre-schoolers and their families. We read books, tell stories, pray and since plenty of songs — all intended to engage the pre-schooler and their older brothers and sisters as well.

Sephardic Shabbat: An Immersion into Judeo-Spanish Culture

SEPHARDIC SHABBAT: AN IMMERSION INTO JUDEO-SPANISH
MUSIC, HISTORY, POETRY & CUISINE

Am Kolel’s Sanctuary Retreat Center, November 8-10, 2013

Rabbi Steven Glazer, Rabbi Leila Gal Berner, and Spanish teachers, Gustavo and Vicky Levy highlight this Sephardic Shabbat weekend delving into the music, history, poetry, prayer and cuisine of the Judeo-Spanish culture.

Rabbi Steven M. Glazer received a Master of Hebrew Literature and rabbinic ordination in Rabbinic Literature from the Jewish Theological Seminary. He received a Doctor of Hebrew Letters from the Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion in Medieval Hebrew Poetry. Rabbi Glazer will teach about Los Poetas Espanoles Judeo (Jewish Spanish poetry).

Rabbi Leila Gal Berner, PhD was ordained at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and received a doctorate in medieval Jewish History UCLA. She teaches in the Philosophy and Religion Department at American University.She will speak about the relationship of Jews of Medieval Spain with Christians and Moslems.

Gustavo and Vicky Levy are from Chile. Gustavo is President of Vital Learning Center, a corporation offering a variety of language services in Spanish and English, and also teaches Spanish at Montgomery College. Vicki has worked as a translator, and has been teaching Spanish to adults for over 15 years.

Rabbi and folk singer David Shneyer will lead participants in Sephardic and Ladino song. A Sephardic film and other study sessions will be presented.

The retreat begins Friday at 7 pm and concludes Sunday morning at 11:30 am. Optional Spanish classes for beginners and intermediates will take place before the event on Friday from 2-5 pm and Sunday from 8:30-11:30 am. Full program with meals is $100. Lodging with breakfast is available for $80. Saturday only program is $75. Both Spanish classes last 3 hours and are $45 each.

SOUND IN MOTION V

The Baltimore Composers Forum is proud to announce Sound in Motion V on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 7:00 PM at the EMP on 307 West Baltimore Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.

A collaboration between local composers, dancers and choreographers, Sound in Motion V is a presentation of original works. The highly innovative projects include works for solo and ensemble, interaction with live movement and computer, and incorporation of spoken word. In its fifth season, Sound in Motion V features music by composers Rahilia Hasanova, George Spicka, Keith Kramer and Ljiljana Jovanović and choreography by Algernon Campbell, Lynne Price and Lauren Withhart.

Tickets: $15 general audience, $10 students and seniors. Cash only at the door.
