Backyard Science Days

The Maryland Science Center will welcome back Rob Mies’ amazing live Bat Encounters show as part of its 8th annual Backyard Science Days on Saturday, August 17 and Sunday, August 18 from Noon until 4 p.m.

Rob, Director of the Organization for Bat Conservation, will bring his furry, fanged friends face-to-face with visitors while explaining the benefits bats have on the environment. Guests will get up close with teeny-tiny fruit bats from Africa and Asia, North America’s Big Brown bat and a Malaysian Flying Fox bat with a six-foot wingspan—the largest bat species in the world!

Beyond bats, Backyard Science Days brings brave visitors within inches of exciting, Maryland-native reptiles like snakes and turtles and birds of prey like owls and eagles. Families can compete in the ever-popular Produce Prix, pitting potato, cucumber and banana-mobiles of their own design against each other in a race to the finish. Visitors can also launch stomp rockets, build bird feeders and create solar art.

Backyard Science Days activities are free with paid admission to the Maryland Science Center. The Maryland Science Center is located at 601 Light Street at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. For information and ticket prices, visit www.marylandsciencecenter.org or call the 24-Hour Information Line at 410-685-5225.
