The Ingenuity Project’s Fifth Annual April Reception
The Ingenuity Project will recognize the accomplishments of the brightest Baltimore City students at Celebrating STEM Education in Baltimore, a reception featuring guest speaker, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Joshua Sharfstein, M.D. Heavy hors d’oeuvres, beer, wine, coffee and dessert will be served by Sascha’s.
Joshua Sharfstein, M.D. is responsible for overseeing the operations and functions of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. In 2009, Sharfstein was named principal deputy commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration by President Barack Obama and served as acting commissioner from March to May 2009. Prior to his tenure at the FDA, Secretary Sharfstein spent four years as the commissioner of health for the City of Baltimore.
All proceeds from Celebrating STEM Education in Baltimore will benefit the non-profit Ingenuity Project, Baltimore City’s fast-track public school program for excellence in science, math and accelerated learning, serving over 500 students in 6th-12th grades.

A “Step” in the Right Direction: Successful Step-Parenting
More and more adults are finding themselves in the role of stepparent, but aren’t quite sure what is expected of them by their spouse, their stepchildren, their own children and extended family. This program will help stepparents and their spouses explore the relationships, roles and boundaries in blended families.

Mixology: The Science of Sake
The Maryland Science Center’s science of adult beverage series focuses on mixology in May with a presentation in The Science of Sake, led by Tiffany Dawn Soto, Master Sake Sommelier.
The Science of Sake is an interactive tasting of four sakes that explores the various flavor profiles available in sake while illustrating the diversity within the genre. With every sip, attendees will learn about the libation’s rich cultural history, the science behind the brewing process, the meanings behind different grade designations, and how production regions affect taste. By the end of the evening, attendees will be able to navigate any sake list with ease while demonstrating an understanding of the cultural norms associated with drinking this mysterious beverage.
The Science of Sake is designed to be a fun, informative and social evening that is appealing to both experienced and novice sake drinkers alike.
Event and Ticket Information
Doors open at 7:00pm, the presentation will run from 7:30pm to approximately 8:30pm, leaving time to mingle and talk with the expert before and after the main portion.
Tickets are $50 per person ($45 members) and are all-inclusive, light fare, drinks, and Science of Sakepresentation. The evening will begin and end with Japanese beer as well for all participants.

About the Presenter
Tiffany Dawn Soto, Master Sake Sommelier, consults for a number of restaurants in the U.S. and abroad, continually striving to raise the bar in the realm of sake accessibility and diversity. She regularly teaches and hosts private and corporate sake seminars and events, and is a highly sought after speaker at events and conventions all over the world.
In addition to her consulting services she serves on the Board of Directors for The Sake Institute, hosts three “Sake Safari” tasting tours to Japan each year, regularly judges for sake festivals and tasting panels, hosts sake education and team-building dinners, and is regular contributor to numerous news and entertainment publications.
