Interfaith New Year’s Eve Prayer Service

Historic St. Ignatius Church at Calvert and Madison Streets will join the Baltimore’s New Year’s Eve scene with its Annual Interfaith Prayer Service – Jewish, Christian, and Muslim.  It will be the 21st gathering of the various faiths to offer thanksgiving for blessings during the past year and to pray for continued blessings in 2014. The musical program will begin on December 31st at 8:00pm.  The hour-long service follows, concluding at 9:30pm, well in advance of other New Year’s Eve activities.   The Rev. Wolfgang  D. Herz-Lane, Bishop of the Maryland-Delaware Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will give the reflection.   A reception will follow the Interfaith Prayer Service.  The event is free.  Complimentary parking is also available in the SHA Parking Lot on Monument Street- the entrance is between Guilford and Calvert streets.

Gil Sandler – Baltimore Stories

Gil Sandler - was born and raised in Baltimore — a circumstance he considers fortunate and one he does not want you to forget. He attended public school (P.S. #59, Garrison Junior High, Baltimore City College, Class of 1941) and then served in the United States Navy.  He was awarded two battle stars. He completed his college education at the University of Pennsylvania.  In 1967 he earned his Master’s Degree in Liberal Arts from the Johns Hopkins University.

He founded Gilbert Sandler and Associates, a PR and Advertising firm, and also started a parallel career writing features for The Sun, The Evening Sun and The Sunday Sun.  Beginning in the 1970s, he began to write a weekly column (“Baltimore Glimpses”) that appeared on the editorial page of The Evening Sun; and when that paper folded, The Morning Sun.  “Baltimore Glimpses” would continue weekly for 31 years.  After selling his company in 1988 to Shandwick of London, he took a position as Director of Communication of The Abell Foundation, in which capacity he still serves.

He is the author of five books (Johns Hopkins University Press): The Neighborhood, Baltimore Glimpses Revisited,  Jewish Baltimore, Small Town Baltimore, and Home Front Baltimore.  He has been editor of, and frequent contributor to, Generations, the Journal of the Jewish Museum of Maryland.  For almost 15 years he wrote a monthly column about Jewish life in Baltimore for The Baltimore Jewish Times.  His essays about life in Baltimore (“Baltimore Stories”) is now a weekly feature on WYPR.

He has received numerous awards for his writing and lecturing, including the Emmert Award for Feature Writing for The Sunday Sun and election to Hall of Fame of his alma mater, Baltimore City College.  He was married for 52 years to his late wife, Joan, and has three children and seven

Sunday Dog Hikes with the Doctor At Baltimore Humane Society

1st Sunday of every month

Bring your dog the First SUNDAY of each month at 11 am! Hike on the grounds of our animal shelter’s forested wildlife sanctuary in Reisterstown, led by Dr. Mary Zink,  Baltimore Humane Society Veterinary Medical Director of the Low Cost Veterinary Wellness Spay/Neuter Center.

DETAILS: 

· Approximately 45 min-1 hour in duration

· BYO DOG (Proof of rabies vaccination required)

· Rain or Shine

· $2 per dog participation fee and no prior registration required

· Moderate hiking level so dog and hiker need to be able to maneuver trees, hills, and streams

· All dogs must be on a 4-6 ft leash (no retractable leashes permitted) and walked by a hiker that is 14 years of age or older

· Bring plenty drinking water for yourself and your dog

· Appropriate hiking attire is recommended à comfortable, flexible, closed-toe shoes and durable clothing that can withstand mud, tall grass, twigs, stickers, stream water etc.
