Dear Baltimore County School Board members:
Please vote to keep Baltimore County public schools closed for the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. I believe that county schools should be taking steps to respect all of the major faiths of the children and teachers in the system. Muslims have been asking for our two most important holidays, Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr, to be honored and acknowledged in some way in the school calendar. Unfortunately, we have been disappointed so far.
But achieving recognition for the Muslim holy days will not happen by taking away days off for other faiths. It should not be a competition among religions. We should be more tolerant and respectful of our school system’s growing diversity. This means finding new ways to add more days, hopefully by regaining flexibility in our school calendar.
Please continue to support a school calendar that closes for the Jewish holidays and please urge the state to give you back the flexibility that you need to acknowledge other faiths’ holidays too.
