On June 30, 2013, HELENE JANICE “CELESETE’ Helene; loving partner of Steven A. Haffner; cherished daughter of the late Oliver and Helen Darling; devoted sister of the late Jay Darling. Faithful and loving friend to many. Helene was born and grew up in New York, where she began her 35 year career at United Air Lines. At United in Baltimore, she met and married her former husband Ron Montgomery. She became an instant “parent advocate” to his 2 daughters, Dawn and Kristen. Helene eagerly embraced the chance to be a grandma to granddaughters Kelsey and Maddie, both of whom continued to be a source of great pride and pleasure. In the way that life often comes full circle, Helene recently “re-United” with her Baltimore Station Instructor Steve, whom she dated briefly in the 70′s. Now they both had the freedom to devote to a relationship that was built on sweet memories, love and shared dreams. It was a love that was TMD. Sadly, Helene began having health issues in the last 15 months that tethered her to Baltimore’s health care system. Then suddenly late in December 2012 she was given a new devastating diagnosis of Pancreatic Cancer. Steve, acting as her support and patient advocate, left no stone unturned in trying to get her in to the best doctors and treatment plans available. Sadly, as the days sped by it became obvious that treatment was not working and Helene, ever the realist, chose Gilchrist Hospice. A place of love and compassion. On Sunday, June 30, her struggle ended. Today she is at peace. The legacy she leaves is one of love and wit and wisdom. Those who loved her will carry Helene in their hearts…..for always and forever.
