Maryland’s governor has extraordinary power, especially in formulating the state budget. That makes it crucial for the Jewish community to have an effective working relationship with the governor (“The Jewish Community and the Governor’s Office” May 23).
Textbook aid to parochial school students was unchanged at $4.5 million for several years until I urged the Baltimore Jewish Council and Maryland Catholic Conference to seek an increase. When the council met with Gov. Martin O’Malley in the fall of 2012, he responded affirmatively to our request and raised this funding to $6 million.
In his budgets, Gov. O’Malley has also increased services for our senior citizens and helped build the Jewish Family Services Building next to the JCC and the Hillel Center for Social Justice at College Park.
Thanks to decisions by Governors O’Malley and Robert Ehrlich, the state has given out more than $100 million in stem cell research grants to some 300 different research projects since 2006. The BJC also supports this funding.
