It’s traditional to make a flag for Simchat Torah, then wave it throughout the evening during the celebration. But instead of decorating your flag with the usual designs like Stars of David, why not create one that shows what about being Jewish is most important to you?
You can make your Simchat Torah table festive by creating your own placemats for the holiday. Just draw a picture, then take to your favorite photocopy store and have it laminated. Another idea is to make your own tablecloth by using watercolor paints on a white sheet. Of course, this will wash out, or the colors will fade and blend if liquid is spilled, so either plan this tablecloth for a one-use only dinner or cover with plastic.
Little hands will enjoy the opportunity to design their own pretend Torah cover again and again. Buy pieces of felt in various colors. Cut out one in the shape of a Torah cover, then from the other colors create tiny shapes in all kinds of sizes to be used to decorate the cover (felt pieces hold fairly well to each other without glue or tape). You also may want to add rhinestones or buttons or other fun materials from around the house.
